A Theology for Christian Counseling: More Than Redemption is the title of one of the more than 100 books written by Dr. Jay E. Adams, the founder of the biblical counseling movement. (Jay recently went home to be with his Lord, November 14, 2020.)
The basic premise of the book is drawn from verses like John 10:10 and Romans 5:20, which state that Satan came to steal, kill and destroy but Jesus came that we might have an abundant life, and where sin did abound, grace does much more abound! So, for example, when a person who has been divorced multiple times asks the counselor the question, “Do you think it’s possible for me to have a happy marriage?” The counselor answers with a resounding, “YES! It’s not only possible for you to have a good marriage but you can have a marriage that sings, that is the envy of all who see it!”
Or, more to what we are doing, when the young man who has grown up fast comes to us from the streets and asks, “Do you really think it’s possible for me to have a better life?” We answer, “YES! Because of what Christ has done, it is possible for you to be so transformed that your own family will have a hard time recognizing the man you can, by His grace, become!”
We’re all about helping these men earn their GED but our greatest focus is on helping them learn how to destroy arguments, to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. We want them to be saved from hell, to be sure, but we want them to learn how to live their best life in Christ now!
